Zapata Falls is located in Mosca, southern Colorado, just a 15-minute drive from the nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park. It is 163 miles (approximately a 3-hour drive) from Colorado Springs Airport and 250 miles (about a 4-hour drive) from Denver International Airport.

As the trail winds up the mountain, the road steadily climbs, offering breathtaking views along the way. One of the best parts about this trail is that the scenic beauty starts before you even hit the trailhead, making the drive itself a memorable experience!

The parking lot has plenty of space, so no reservations are needed—just pull in and park. Best of all, parking is free. Even if you don’t plan on hiking, it’s worth the trip just to drive up to the parking lot and take in the stunning panoramic views of the Great Sand Dunes.
The parking lot offers more than just a place to park—it’s also equipped with picnic tables, a barbecue area, and restrooms, making it a convenient spot to relax and enjoy the surroundings before or after your hike.
Zapata Falls Hike
The Zapata Falls is less than a mile round trip, but it does involve a steep climb. The path is gravelly, so hiking boots are highly recommended if you have them. Even on dry days, the path can be very slippery.
The trail offers little to no shade, so the summer sun can be quite harsh. Be sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Along the way, you’ll find a few benches where you can take a break, which is especially important given the trail’s elevation gain and the heat. Even though the hike is short, the combination of altitude and temperature makes it essential to keep your energy up and stay hydrated.
It didn’t take long to reach the river, making the hike feel pleasantly short. As you approach, you’ll notice the temperature drop, with cool, refreshing air wrapping around you—nature’s own air conditioner, offering the perfect escape from the heat.
Hiking Through the River
When we first arrived at the river, the waterfall was still hidden from view, and we thought, “This might be good enough.” But then, we spotted people making their way downstream.
With the water level low, we decided to carefully navigate across the stones in the riverbed, pushing forward with growing excitement! As we ventured further, a canyon-like entrance came into sight. The sound of the waterfall grew louder, heightening our anticipation for the breathtaking view that awaited us just ahead.
At last, we caught a glimpse of the plunge pool and a smaller waterfall. The crystal-clear water and the refreshing coolness were absolutely breathtaking, leaving us in awe of this hidden gem!
As we continued deeper into the canyon, the impressive 30-foot Zapata Falls finally came into view. It was a stunning surprise—who would have thought, if you just go a little father, you get to see such a hidden wonder? The sight was so inviting that, in the heat of the day, I was tempted to dive right into the plunge pool. But with no change of clothes on hand, I reluctantly decided to hold back.
When visiting Zapata Falls, be prepared to walk through the river. While some people attempt it in sandals or even barefoot, this can be slippery and dangerous. It’s much safer to wear hiking boots or water shoes. I recommend Keen boots, which are waterproof and allow us to comfortably navigate the water without any issues, making the hike all the more enjoyable.
Tips for Hiking to Zapata Falls
Zapata Falls sits at around 9,200 feet in elevation, making it a real high-altitude adventure. Colorado is known for its lofty elevations, and the drive up to the trailhead is no exception. If you’re not used to the altitude, take it slow and make sure to drink plenty of water on the way up. It’s also helpful to focus on deep, intentional breathing to get more oxygen into your system.
If you’re worried about the altitude, bringing a portable oxygen canister can give you some extra peace of mind.
