You’ll find Native American jewelry vendors selling one-of-a-kind pieces, local artisans, and music performances in the warmer months. There are public restrooms nearby, and everything is within walking distance.
2. Historic Churches & Architecture
Santa Fe is full of rich history, and its churches are some of the most iconic landmarks in the city. Best of all, they’re all within walking distance from the Santa Fe Plaza.
Known as the oldest church in the United States. You can even ring the historic church bell, which kids (and adults) love!
Located right next to San Miguel Chapel, this small museum offers a glimpse into life in Santa Fe. (It was closed when we visited, so we couldn’t go inside. If you’re planning to go on a Sunday, be sure to check the opening hours ahead of time.
Famous for its mysterious spiral staircase, often called miraculous. There’s a small entry fee, but the architecture and story behind it were worth it.

I’ve heard from many people that this location is even better than other Meow Wolf sites, so I’m looking forward to visiting next time!

This beautiful restaurant, La Plazuela at La Fonda, is inside the historic La Fonda on the Plaza hotel. It feels a little fancy but is still very welcoming for families. We loved the tableside guacamole. They make it fresh right in front of you, and my kids were totally into it! It was fun to watch and delicious to eat. A great place for a relaxed but special lunch or dinner.
French Pastry Shop & Restaurant
Also located at La Fonda, this little spot, French Pastry Shop & Restaurant, is perfect for a quick breakfast or a sweet break. We stopped by for pastries and coffee, and it had such a cozy, charming vibe. It’s easy to access from outside the hotel as well, which made it super convenient when we were out exploring with the kids.
Kakawa Chocolate House (Yes, again! It reallly is that good!)
If your family loves chocolate, you have to check this place out. They are known for their historic drinking chocolate, but it was so hot the day we visited that we chose ice cream instead. It was delicious! We brought a cooler with us, but completely forgot to use it. I really wish I had picked up some chocolates to take home. So here is your reminder: If you’re visiting during the warmer months, bring a cooler and remember to use it!

Downtown & Nearby Hotels
We’ve stayed at a couple of different places in Santa Fe, depending on our trip goals and budget.
A historic and beautiful hotel right in the heart of downtown, perfect if you want to stay where everything is walkable.
This Adobe-style hotel really stands out and has such a cool Santa Fe vibe. It’s just a short walk from the Plaza and right next to the Loretto Chapel, so the location is very convenient. There’s even a pool, which makes it a great option for families too. It’s definitely on my list of places I’d love to stay next time!
This hotel isn’t right in the center of downtown, but it’s an easy walk to the Plaza, and I really liked the atmosphere. It’s comfortable, convenient, and great if you want to explore on foot without being right in the middle of the crowds.
A fun pick for families, especially if your kids love a good pool day!
This time, we chose Hyatt Place to save on our budget. It’s clean, family-friendly, and includes breakfast, always a plus with kids. Just keep in mind, it’s about a 15-minute drive to downtown, so you’ll need a car.
Parking Tip: Santa Fe can get busy, especially on weekends. If you’re staying outside of downtown, try to arrive early for parking and beat the crowds.
We also stayed at Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort, about an hour from Santa Fe. If you’re looking to relax after sightseeing, this resort is perfect! It has a spa, pool, cultural programs, and wide-open space for kids to roam. It felt like a mini-vacation within a vacation.
Hot Springs near Santa Fe
If you’re a fan of hot springs, there are some beautiful and relaxing spots just a short drive from Santa Fe. We didn’t get to try them this time, but they’re high on my wish list!
Ojo Santa Fe is a peaceful hot springs resort located just under 30 minutes from downtown Santa Fe. it offers beautiful outdoor soaking pools, a sauna, and a variety of spa services, making it a perfect spot to relax and unwind. We wanted to stay here during our trip, but unfortunately, it was fully booked. A good reminder to plan early, especially during peak travel seasons.
While kids under 13 are welcome to stay at the resort, they are not permitted to use the hot springs, so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re traveling with young children.
Ever wondered what a Japanese-style ryokan looks like in the U.S.? This is it! Set in the mountains just outside Santa Fe, Ten Thousand Waves is a Japanese-inspired hot spring resort that feels like a true escape. It’s not very kid-friendly, but it’s perfect for a solo trip, couples getaway, or a quiet spa day.
Tip: All of these resorts are popular, especially during weekends and holidays. Make sure to book early if you plan to visit.
