Sailing to Alaska from Vancouver? Then you’ve probably asked the same question I did: which Vancouver cruise port hotel should we stay at the night before?

Before our 7 night Disney cruise to Alaska on the Disney Wonder in September 2026, our family stayed at the Fairmont Waterfront. The cruise terminal at Canada Place is right across the street. No Uber to book on cruise morning. No watching the clock in traffic. You just walk over.

And our trip came with a little surprise. Our departure was delayed by four hours, so the hotel held our bags after checkout, and we simply rolled them across the street when it was time. In this post, I’ll share why we chose this hotel, what our harbor view room was like, whether you can see the ship from your window, breakfast at ARC, and how embarkation morning went.

Quick Summary: Where to Stay Before a Disney Alaska Cruise From Vancouver

Stay within walking distance of Canada Place, the Vancouver cruise terminal. We stayed at the Fairmont Waterfront, about a 3 minute walk across the street.

  • 🚢 Location: Right across from Canada Place. No shuttle needed, even with luggage.
  • 🛏️ Our Room: Signature Harbor View Room with 2 double beds. Plenty of space for one night.
  • 👀 Ship View: We could see the Disney Wonder from our window. Which side the ship docks can change, so check the port schedule.
  • 🧳 Good to Know: Our sailing was delayed by 4 hours, and the hotel held our bags after checkout.

Read on for our room, the ship view, breakfast at ARC, and how embarkation morning went.

How to Choose a Vancouver Cruise Port Hotel

Here’s my short answer: stay somewhere you can walk to Canada Place.

Disney Alaska cruises leave from the Canada Place cruise terminal in downtown Vancouver. When your hotel is right there, cruise morning gets so much simpler. You don’t have to book a ride, guess how bad traffic will be, or keep checking the time. You just walk over with your bags.

Why We Chose the Fairmont Waterfront

Canada Place Way with the Pan Pacific Vancouver on the left and the Fairmont Waterfront on the right

We chose the Fairmont Waterfront for two reasons: the location and the Fairmont name.

Fairmont feels like a safe choice to me. Over the years, we’ve stayed and dined at several Fairmont hotels, including the castle hotel in Quebec City (here’s my honest review of the Fairmont Château Frontenac). When I see the Fairmont name, I know what kind of service to expect, and that’s exactly what I want the night before a big trip.

The other hotel right here is the Pan Pacific Vancouver, just across the street. When I booked, the Fairmont Waterfront had the lower price of the two, and with the location being almost the same, the choice felt easy for us.

How Close Is It to the Cruise Terminal?

Very close. It’s about a 3 minute walk. Step out of the hotel, cross the street, and you’re at Canada Place. There’s no need for a shuttle or a taxi.

Sidewalk outside the Fairmont Waterfront leading toward the Vancouver cruise terminal

On cruise morning, you won’t get lost. As the port arrival time gets closer, the sidewalk fills with cruise guests, and staff are out guiding everyone. On a Disney sailing, it’s even easier: just follow the families in Mickey ears and Disney caps!

Getting There From the Airport

We flew into Vancouver International Airport and took a Lyft to the hotel. By car, the ride is about 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Since we arrived the day before, there was no rush at all.

Our Signature Harbor View Room

We stayed in a Signature Harbor View Room with 2 double beds. For our family of four, it had plenty of space.

Can You See the Ship From Your Room?

Yes, we could! From our window, we had a clear view of the Disney Wonder waiting at Canada Place. Seeing the ship we were about to board, right there the night before, made me so happy, and it got us even more excited for the trip!

But there’s a story behind this view. Seen from the hotel, the Disney ship usually docks on the left side. On our sailing, another ship was docked there, so the Disney Wonder was on the right side instead. We checked which rooms were available, asked the port staff where the ship would be, and switched to a room facing the Disney Wonder at the last minute. I think this was unusual, so don’t count on doing the same.

🚢 Want to See Your Ship From Your Room?

  • Check the port schedule: The Port of Vancouver website lists which cruise ships are coming in, so you can see what else will be at Canada Place on your day.
  • Choose a harbor view room: We booked a Signature Harbor View Room, and it faced the port.
  • No view? No problem: The terminal is a few minutes away on foot, so you can walk over and watch your ship arrive up close.

Breakfast at ARC and Coffee Nearby

Breakfast buffet with croissants, pastries, and fruit at ARC in the Fairmont Waterfront

Breakfast is a buffet at ARC, the restaurant on the lobby level, to the right as you walk in. It was delicious.

We also stopped by ARC the night before for a cheese plate and drinks, an easy way to settle in without going far.

Tim Hortons a short walk from the Fairmont Waterfront in downtown Vancouver

That said, you don’t have to eat breakfast at the hotel. There’s a Tim Hortons just outside, so grabbing coffee and a quick bite there is an easy option, too.

Pool, Hot Tub, and Gym

The hotel has an outdoor pool, plus a hot tub and a gym next to the pool deck. We didn’t have time to swim on this trip. If you can check in early, though, a slow afternoon by the pool the day before would be a lovely way to start your vacation.

Next time, I’d love to enjoy the pool. A one night stay before the cruise works great, but if you can, staying two nights lets you explore Vancouver and really enjoy the hotel itself.

Embarkation Day: Walking to the Ship

Here’s how our cruise morning went, step by step. For the full picture of boarding day, see my guide to Disney Cruise embarkation day.

1. Stop by the Disney Cruise Line Desk in the Hotel

Disney Cruise Line welcome desk inside the Fairmont Waterfront hotel in Vancouver

This was a nice surprise. Disney Cruise Line has a desk right inside the hotel, with staff who help cruise guests, a bit like guest services. Our luggage tags never arrived at home before the trip (normally, Disney mails them to you ahead of time), so we picked up our tags right here. If something is missing or you have a question before boarding, this desk is a handy place to ask.

2. Check Out (and Leave Your Bags if Boarding Is Late)

Our sailing was the Disney Wonder’s first after a refurbishment, and the work ran late, so departure was pushed back by about four hours. After checkout, the hotel kept our bags for us until it was time to head over. Normally, Disney sailings leave on schedule, so you probably won’t need this. But it was reassuring to know the hotel had our back.

3. Walk Across the Street With Your Luggage

It was a sunny day, so we simply rolled our suitcases across the street ourselves. Disney Cruise Line staff were out with signs guiding guests to the terminal, so finding the way was easy.

4. Drop Your Bags at the Port

At the port, we handed our checked bags to the porters. When I gave them a tip, they told me it wasn’t necessary, which honestly surprised me! Maybe tipping feels a little different in Canada than in the U.S. We tipped anyway. If you’re wondering how tipping works once you’re onboard, my guide to Disney Cruise Line gratuities covers it.

Booking Tips and Hotels Near Canada Place

Book early. Hotels near the cruise terminal tend to get pricier around cruise dates, especially in the busy Alaska season. Once your sailing is set, check hotel prices right away.

You can check rates and availability at the Fairmont Waterfront here, or use this map to compare hotels within walking distance of Canada Place.

Who Should Stay Here?

I’d recommend the Fairmont Waterfront if you:

  • Don’t want to worry about traffic, rides, or timing on cruise morning
  • Want a little luxury before your vacation begins
  • Would love to see the Disney ship up close before you board

The location is the biggest reason to stay, and the Fairmont service made our night before the cruise easy. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes within walking distance, too. For our next sailing from Vancouver, I’d happily stay here again.
