Disney Cruise Line is, without question, one of the best cruise experiences out there, and yes, it is priced higher than most other cruise lines. After 8 Disney voyages, one of my favorite ways to book is through a strategy that most people scroll right past: the GTY (Guarantee) stateroom. It is one of the best-kept Disney cruise booking tips that experienced repeat cruisers quietly use, and once you understand how it works, you will want to keep it in your back pocket for every future sailing.
In this guide, I am going to walk you through exactly what a GTY stateroom is, how to decide if it is right for your family, and what you need to know before you book.

What Are IGT, OGT, and VGT on Disney Cruise Line?
When browsing the Disney Cruise Line website, you might notice specific categories like “VGT,” “OGT,” or “IGT” priced 20% to 30% lower than standard rates.
These are known as Restricted Guarantee Rates. When you book one of these, you are choosing a room category (Inside, Oceanview, or Verandah) rather than a specific cabin number. Disney guarantees you will get a room in that category (or better!), but they decide the exact location later, usually about 30 to 45 days before you sail.
Think of it as a “last-minute deal” in exchange for your flexibility. You’ll typically see these three codes:
IGT (Inside Guarantee): An inside stateroom with no window
This is usually the most affordable way to book a Disney Cruise. Inside rooms do not have natural light, but they are designed efficiently and are surprisingly comfortable.
Many families find that an inside room works perfectly because they spend most of their day around the ship enjoying the pools, shows, restaurants, and kids clubs.
One unexpected benefit is that inside cabins are very dark, which can make them excellent for sleeping.
OGT (Oceanview Guarantee): A stateroom with a porthole window so you can enjoy ocean views and natural light.
The big advantage of OGT is that you can still see the ocean, but the price is usually lower than a balcony room since there is no verandah.
For many travelers, this feels like a nice balance between saving money and still having a view outside the room.
VGT (Verandah Guarantee): A stateroom with a private balcony
A VGT room includes a private verandah, so you can step outside and enjoy fresh ocean air and ocean views right from your room.
Many Disney Cruise fans say that having a balcony is one of the best parts of the cruise experience. It’s perfect for relaxing in the morning, watching the ocean, or enjoying the scenery as the ship arrives at port.
If you like having your own outdoor space, VGT is a great way to enjoy a balcony stateroom.

Our GTY Experience: The Real Story From Both Ends of the Ship
We have booked VGT (Verandah Guarantee) and OGT (Oceanview Guarantee) cabins on several Disney cruises, and our experiences have truly varied. I want to share both sides, so you know what to expect when booking a GTY room.
A Wonderful Midship Surprise
On one sailing that was not heavily booked, we were assigned a midship cabin on deck 6. Midship is often considered the sweet spot on a cruise ship. It tends to feel the most stable, it’s centrally located, and it makes it easy to get around the ship, especially with kids.
That cruise felt incredibly comfortable from start to finish.
When We Ended Up at the Aft
On another sailing, we were assigned a cabin all the way at the aft (rear) of the ship.
We noticed more engine vibration at night, and the ship’s movement felt stronger than we were used to. It was still a wonderful trip, just a different experience than we had hoped for.
Not All Verandahs Are the Same
On another cruise, we were assigned a verandah that was noticeably smaller than the balconies on nearby cabins.
Of course, we understood that this can happen when booking a discounted GTY rate. Still, it was one of those moments where we thought, “It would be nice if the balcony were just a bit bigger so we could really relax out here with a cup of coffee.”
It was still a lovely space to step outside and enjoy the ocean views, but it reminded us that not all verandahs are exactly the same size.
What We Learned From Booking GTY
Looking back, the cruises where we chose our own cabin location felt a little more predictable and comfortable.
That said, GTY can still be a great option. When everything lines up, it can feel like a fantastic deal. And even when the location wasn’t ideal, we still had wonderful cruises.
The key is to keep an open mind about cabin location. If that works for you, GTY can be a great way to book a Disney Cruise.

GTY bookings come with a handful of conditions that differ from a standard reservation. None of them are dealbreakers, but they are worth reading through before you commit.
If your family loves boarding early, exploring the ship, and enjoying lunch onboard on embarkation day, this is something to keep in mind.

A good place to start is the Special Offers section on the Disney Cruise Line website. GTY rates sometimes appear there as the sailing date gets closer, and they can move quickly once they are released.
You might want to begin checking around 3 to 5 months before your preferred sailing date, and continue checking occasionally as the date approaches.
You can also look at third-party booking sites such as Cruise Direct or Expedia. These platforms often show GTY availability clearly and sometimes include Onboard Credits, which can be a nice bonus to use for specialty dining, spa treatments, or souvenirs during your cruise.
Another helpful resource is MouseSavers. Their website often lists GTY availability by sailing date, making it easy to see which cruises currently have discounted cabins. I often start there when checking for GTY options because it gives a quick overview of what sailings may be available.
