Mount Princeton Hot Springs had been on my Colorado bucket list long before we moved here. Tucked in the mountains and known for its creekside soaking, it’s one of the most scenic hot springs in Colorado. I always thought it was just for hotel guests, but when I found out they offer day-use passes, we finally went for a visit in winter. Soaking in the warm water while listening to the creek was peaceful and refreshing. In this post, I’ll share what to expect, how to get there, what to pack, and tips for visiting with family.

Where is Mount Princeton Hot Springs? Directions and Access from Denver & Colorado Springs

The resort, Mount Princeton Hot Springs, is located at 15870 County Road 162, Nathrop, CO, about 2.5 hours from Denver and under 2 hours from Colorado Springs.

Nearest towns: Buena Vista (10 min), Salida (15 min)

A straight road to beautiful snow covered mountains.

Tip: Enjoy the drive! It’s part of the experience! The mountain views along Chalk Creek Drive, especially near Buena Vista, are absolutely stunning. Snow-covered peaks, winding roads, and dramatic scenery make the journey to Mount Princeton Hot Springs feel like a scenic adventure in itself.

What to expect at Mount Princeton Hot Springs

Visitor center office at Dinkey Creek, California.

When we arrived, we parked near the Historic bathhouse and carefully made our way down the stairs to check in. If you’re visiting in winter, take it slow. Some areas get icy!

The front office is compact but friendly. You can rent towels for $10 (and get $5 back when returned), or bring your own. Water dispensers are available inside, but I recommend bringing your own reusable water bottles. The combination of hot springs and high altitude can really sneak up on you when it comes to dehydration.

Noodles are sold at the reception.

Creekside Hot Springs: Natural Hot Springs in Colorado by the River

Creekside Hot Springs, located along Chalk Creek, offers a unique and peaceful way to enjoy nature. These natural hot spring pools are formed right in the river, and reaching them requires climbing over some rocks. Because of that, they aren’t accessible for strollers or wheelchairs.

The water was warm and felt great, with good clarity and barely any sulfur smell. When we dug into the gravel at the bottom, warm water bubbled up! A fun little discovery, especially for the kids. Even during winter, the Colorado sun can be quite strong, so don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, a sun hat or beanie, and sunglasses to stay comfortable while you relax.

Exploring the Pools: Historic Hot Spring Pools at Mount Princeton

The Historic Bath House and Creekside Hot Springs are located in the main area, just a short walk from the locker rooms. The resort also features a Relaxation Pool for ages 16 and up, a family-friendly Infinity Pool (open Friday through Sunday), and a seasonal water slide available during the summer months.

Mount Princeton offers four types of family-friendly hot spring pools.

  1. Exercise Pool (Open year-round)
  2. Soaking Pool (Open year-round)
  3. Infinity Pool ( Open Fridays – Sundays)
  4. Water Slide Pool (Only in Summer: from Memorial Day through Labor Day)

Exercise Pool: Cooler, great for swimming and play

This is the exercise pool. The water temperature is lower than the other pool, the Soaking pool. I just let my kids burn their energy here. You can find the exercise pool between Historic Bath House and Creekside Hot Springs.

Soaking Pool: Warmer, historic pool dating back to 1879 — perfect for relaxing

While our kids were swimming in the Exercise pool, my husband and I relaxed in the Soaking Pool. This pool is the historic one that has been open since 1879.  The pool is warmer than the Creekside Hot Springs, and it was quite deep. Towards the front of the picture above, it gets deeper. I couldn’t even reach the bottom of the pool. If you have small children, bring some floats or stay near the Bathhouse where it is shallow. Floating with a noodle in this pool could have been more relaxing.

The hot spring pool can be seen under a pine tree.

Adults-Only Hot Springs: Relaxation Pool for Ages 16+

There’s a special Relaxation Pool for guests aged 16 and up, available only to hotel or spa guests. A great spot if you’re visiting for a quiet getaway or couples trip.

Steam Room: Warm Up After Soaking Outdoors

After our soak, the walk back to the locker room felt chilly. The steam room was the perfect way to warm up again and wrap up our visit feeling totally relaxed.

What’s the Locker Room Like? Showers, Changing Areas, and Tips

Located inside the Historic Bath House, the locker room has lockers (bring cash), benches, and one larger changing room. Unfortunately, the changing room doors didn’t lock, so I was a bit nervous while changing. The open-concept shower has four heads and includes shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. It’s good for a quick rinse but not a full hair-washing session.

What to Bring to Mount Princeton Hot Springs: Family Packing Tips

Here’s what we brought (or wished we had!):

  • Swimsuits
  • Towels (Towel rental is available for $10)
  • coverups or bathrobes
  • Beanies (when it’s cold)
  • Pool Bag
  • Cash (when using lockers)

Mount Princeton Hot Springs Lodging: Stay and Soak in Style

The Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort offers a variety of lodging options, from lodge rooms to private cabins. If you’re looking to extend your trip, this is a great base for nearby outdoor activities like whitewater rafting, scenic hiking, or skiing (in winter).

Camping nearby? You’re in luck! There are several campgrounds around Buena Vista, making this one of the best hot springs in Colorado that allows camping nearby.

A orange tent, two camping chairs and mini table are located by a fire ring at Collegiate Peaks Campground in Colorado.
