Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado is a beloved destination known for its stunning mountains, beautiful lakes, and abundant wildlife. With 4.5 million visitors each year, reservations in advance are required during the summer to help manage the number of guests. The park features five campgrounds, four of which are open seasonally from spring to fall.
During our visit, we stayed at Timber Creek Campground, the only campground on the park’s west side. This spacious campground offers breathtaking views and frequent wildlife sightings, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts.
In this review, I’ll highlight why Timber Creek Campground is a top choice for campers, detailing its facilities and nearby attractions to help you plan the perfect camping trip!

How to get to Timber Lake Campground
Rocky Mountain National Park is about a two-hour drive from Denver International Airport. The park has four entrances, with three located on the east side. The closest entrance to Timber Creek Campground is the Grand Lake Entrance, on the western side of the park. While you can enter from the Estes Park side (Eastern side) and enjoy sightseeing through the national park on your way to the campground, the east entrances can get particularly crowded during the summer. If you have limited time and are looking for a smoother and better experience entering the park, I highly recommend entering through the Grand Lake Entrance.

Navigating Rocky Mountain National Park: Entrance Tips for Summer Visitors
During the summer, Rocky Mountain National Park implements entrance reservations to manage the high volume of visitors. Every year, we witness many cars being turned away because they were unaware of this requirement. If you’re planning to visit between late May and mid-October, be sure to book a time slot entry in advance.
However, if you have a campground reservation, you’re in luck, you won’t need a separate entrance reservation. Simply show your campground reservation details ( confirmation email or the Recreation.gov app) at the park entrance, and you’re good to go.
Keep in mind, like all U.S. national parks, Rocky Mountain National Park charges a daily entrance fee, except on designated free entry days. Planning ahead will ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit to this beautiful park.
Rocky Mountain National Park Admission
One Day Pass: $30
7 Day Pass: $35
America the Beautiful National Parks Pass ( Annual Pass) : $80
You can purchase your entrance tickets in advance online or pay at the gate on the day of your visit. Please note that from June 2024, the gate will be cashless, so don’t forget to bring your credit card.

Once you enter Rocky Mountain National Park, Timber Creek Campground is jus a short 15-minute drive away. But, don’t let the brief distance fool you- this route is full of wildlife sightings. We often stopped to watch the animals, turning our quick drive into a longer, sightseeing adventure. So, plan for some extra time to enjoy these unexpected encounters!

Checking In at Timber Creek Campground
Upon arriving at the campground, you’ll need to check in again. Timber Creek Campground does not have walk-in sites, during peek season; reservations are required. At the campground entrance, a staff member will assist you with the check-in process. They will provide a brief orientation and give you a map of the campground.
Since cell phone signals are unreliable inside the national park, it’s best to take a screenshot of your reservation details ahead of time. This will ensure a smooth check-in process without any last-minute scrambling to find your confirmation email.

You can purchase firewood next to the check-in office. However, it’s only available for purchase between 5 PM and 7PM. Note the purchase is cash only. Price per bag: $10 (as of June 2024).
If this timing doesn’t work for you, you may want to get firewood outside the park.
The Map of Timber Creek Campground

The official website mentioned “Walk to,” so I was initially concerned about the distance between the parking area and the tent sites. Fortunately, they are very close to each other. Although a wagon would be handy, carrying the stuff without one wasn’t so hard.
Each campsite offers plenty of space. Our site, number 70, was slightly smaller and limited to a maximum of six people. Despite this, it was spacious enough, with trees providing good privacy between sites. Our six-person tent fit comfortably, but setting up two of them would have been a bit tight.

Campsite Features and Views
Each site has a tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring. Campsites located away from Trail Ridge Road offer an amazing mountain view, with snow-capped peaks right in front of you. These sites are also more secluded from other campers with enough space and trees between the campsites, giving you a sense of having the majestic scenery all to yourself.
Campground Amenities

Flush Toilets
Timber Creek Campground offers flush toilets with sinks for hand washing. The restrooms are well-lit, making them easy to locate even at night. But, as with many campgrounds, supplies like hand soap and toilet paper can run out, so you might want to bring your own just in case.

Dishwashing Sink
There is a dishwashing sink located outside some of the restroom buildings, but not all of them have the sinks.

Water Spigot
There are several water stations throughout the campground, shared among neighbor campsites. If you worry about the noise, it might be best to avoid campsites near these water stations and restrooms.

Food Locker
Each campsite is equipped with a shared food locker, used by neighboring sites. Given the frequent bear activity at Timber Creek Campground, you need to store all food and scented items (including toothpaste) in the food locker to protect you and your vehicle’s safety.

Dump Station
In bear-prone areas like this campground, the trash bins are designed to be bear-proof. The doors on these bins are often placed at a height that can be a bit high even for adults. Don’t forget to dispose of your trash before bedtime to avoid attracting bears. Additionally, Timber Creek Campground provides a recycling bin for propane canisters, which is very convenient.
Weather Tips for Rocky Mountain National Park

We escaped the heat of Denver to visit Rocky Mountain National Park, but it was quite hot at the campground as well. The high altitude brings the sun closer, making the sunlight more intense and the daytime heat more noticeable. However, as soon as the sun sets, the temperature drops rapidly. It doesn’t just get cooler- it gets cold! Our breath was visible in the air. Be sure to dress in layers and bring warm clothing. Wearing beanies for the night is highly recommended.
During this trip, we arrived at the campground later than expected, around 7 PM. After setting up the tent, we started cooking for dinner. Despite the initial heat while unloading and setting up, it quickly became very chilly. By the time we were having dinner, the temperature had dropped significantly. We learned that at Timber Creek Campground, eating early before sunset is key to having a comfortable dining experience.
Also, the mountain weather can be unpredictable, and that’s especially true around Rocky Mountain National Park in the summer. Mornings often start sunny, but sudden thunderstorms can roll in during the afternoons. Since afternoon weather in Colorado can be quite volatile, plan your sightseeing and hiking for the morning. Be flexible with your schedule, like setting up your tent either before the rain starts of after it passes. This way, you can make the most of your time and stay dry while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
Timber Creek Campground Features
Timber Creek Campground is renowned for its spectacular scenery. Nestled at the base of the mountains, campers are treated to gorgeous mountain views. The campground is very quiet, offering a serene environment perfect for relaxation.
The area is also rich in wildlife, with bears frequently visiting the campground. Do not put your food inside your tent. All food and scented items should be stored in the provided food lockers, especially at night.
Quiet hours: From 10 Pm to 6 AM
Activities At The Campground

One of the most charming features of Timber Creek Campground is the beautiful river that runs through it. We saw several people enjoying fishing along the riverbank.
*Note: To fish in Colorado, you must obtain a fishing license beforehand. For more information, visit Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
When I booked this campsite, we didn’t realize how close the river was. I would love to soak my feet in the river and enjoy reading here next time.
What’s around Timber Creek Campground

Kawuneeche Visitor Center
Just a short distance from the national park entrance, along the road to campground you’ll find a visitor center. This is a great place to ask park rangers any questions you might have and pick up some souvenirs.
Since there is almost no cell phone signal, the visitor center is the perfect spot to get information about the weather, trails, and any other inquiries you may have. Make sure to stop before heading to your campsite for all the latest updates and helpful advice.

Recommended Trail Near the Campground: Holzwarth Historic Site
Located about a 3-minute drive from the campground, this trail leads to the site of a resort operated in the early 1900s. Here, you can glimpse into the life of a German immigrant family who ran the resort. It’s a fascinating peek into what a resort looked like a century ago.
Park rangers are available at the trailhead and the historic site to provide information and answer questions. The trail is unpaved but flat, making a half-mile one-way walk accessible and all-generation friendly.
During our hike, we spotted elk, moose, and chipmunks, allowing us to fully enjoy the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. The trail is open and offers no shade, so prepare for any sun protection.

Nearest Town to Timber Creek Campground
The closest town to Timber Creek Campground is Grand Lake. Located just outside Rocky Mountain National Park, this charming town is set beside a picturesque lake. Although it’s a popular tourist spot, Grand Lake has managed to keep its quaint, small-town vibe.
Grand Lake offers a delightful mix of attractions, including cozy restaurants, charming cafes, ice cream parlors, and unique gift shops. It’s the perfect place to explore, relax, and soak in the local atmosphere. Whether you’re looking for a tasty meal, a sweet treat, or local souvenir, Grand Lake has something for everyone.

Nearby Store: Mountain Market
Just before you reach downtown Grand Lake, you’ll find Mountain Market, the closest supermarket to the campground. It’s a small store, but it has everything you probably need for camping, including groceries, ice, and firewood.
Final Thoughts
Nestled within the stunning Rocky Mountain National Park, this campground is a nature lover’s paradise. Conveniently located close to the charming town of Grand Lake, it offers easy access and plenty of amenities.
Wildlife enthusiasts will be delighted by the frequent wildlife sightings that add an extra thrill to the camping experience. As the only campground on the park’s west side, it benefits from proximity to one of the less crowded entrances, making your arrival and departure a breeze.
While the tent camping season is limited and reservations can be competitive, securing a spot here is well worth the effort! You’re guaranteed an unforgettable camping experience surrounded by amazing natural beauty!

How to Reserve a Campsite in Rocky Mountain National Park
As one of Colorado’s premier national parks, securing a campsite during the season, especially on weekends, can be quite competitive. Reservations open six months in advance, but some sites may become available closer to your desired date. In fact, our family managed to book a spot just one week before our trip!
If you’re looking to make a last-minute reservation, be prepared by visiting the official website, Recreation.gov before the booking window opens. This will give you a better chance of securing a campsite in this popular park. Happy camping!
From late May to mid-October, you’ll need a reservation to enter Rocky Mountain National Park. The good news is, if you’ve already booked a campsite, you don’t need an additional reservation for park entry. Just remember, while the entry reservation isn’t required with a campground booking, you’ll still need to pay the park entrance fee.
